Kentucky Kingdom, formerly Six Flags is located in the heart of Louisville just 10 minutes from downtown. Due to a downturn in the economy, the Six Flags location was shut down between 2009 and 2013. The park was purchased and re-branded into Kentucky Kingdom by an investor specializing in the renewal of amusements parks; he expanded the park to almost double the original size, now on 65 acres. In 2014 Kentucky Kingdom had its grand opening. Today the park has over 850,000 visitors annually, 100,000 of which are season pass holders.
Under new ownership Kentucky Kingdom began to look for updated Point-of-Sale systems. The business is seasonal, running from April through September so they needed units that would be able to stand up to demanding retail and food service environments plus be easy to move and store for the fall and winter months. They were using HP computer towers with monitors that were sometimes faulty when wet due to spills or food debris, a common occurrence in a food service environment. The units were also bulky and difficult to store during the off season because they had to move both a computer tower and monitor. Kentucky Kingdom needed a dependable Point-of-Sale system that would connect to the printer and cash drawer with a DB9 serial cable and also hold up to the demanding nature of an amusement park environment. Bematech was one of few manufacturers on the market that could meet Kentucky Kingdom’s specific requests.
Kentucky Kingdom selected Bematech All-in-One bundles which included; SB9015F-J20DR-3DW (All-in-One terminal), LR2000 (printer), and CR3006-GY (cash drawer). Twenty one bundles were implemented in all departments including: food and beverage, retail and ticketing. The SB9015F bundles could easily be stored during the off season because of the more compact design compared to a traditional computer tower and touch screen. The SB9015F units were purchased with integrated MSR and VFD customer displays which further saved on storage and counter space. The staff found the All-in-One units much more reliable even in the event of spills because of their resisitive touch technology.
“Bematech All-in-Ones are less susceptible to liquid effecting the unit and use minimal counter space in our shops and food service locations” – Marty Ernst, Technology Manager, Kentucky Kingdom
Kentucky Kingdom brought back to life an amusement park that had seen better days and Bematech was happy to be part of the upgrade in technology used to fuel the new park.
